Paul Hostovsky<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday I couldn\u2019t remember the word\u00a0colander,<\/em>
a word I love and have always thought of
as one of those words that\u2019s lovelier than the thing\u00a0
itself. I was holding the thing itself in my hands,
the steaming angel hair pasta draining in the sink,\u00a0
when I looked at the colander and thought to myself,\u00a0
\u201cWhat is the name of this thing?\u201d And maybe it was
age, and maybe it was the beginning of something\u00a0
more pernicious, but in the end we have to let go\u00a0
of everything. We have to let go of every single\u00a0
thing and its name. And because I have always loved\u00a0
the names of things more than the things themselves
I stood at the sink missing\u00a0colander,\u00a0<\/em>loving it more
than the colander, more than the angel hair pasta\u00a0
that I chewed abstractedly over dinner, trying to locate\u00a0
colander\u00a0<\/em>in my mouth, where it used to live
until it disappeared, its three slippery syllables\u00a0
like three spaghetti noodles in a pot of spaghetti noodles.\u00a0
And today, when I finally remembered it\u2014found it right
where I\u2019d left it\u2014I whispered it to myself over and over
like a lover whispering the name of a lost beloved
who returns, but is untrue, and will disappear again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
