it’s a beautiful evening.
a man in the street
puts his hand on a wall\u00a0
and throws up a whole
brass section orchestra
while sun sets its head\u00a0
against everything,
making stubble of dust
hung with five o’clock\u00a0
shadows. the street
turns its neck like a woman
with wonderful hair. the trees\u00a0
fill with red evening\u00a0
light and the sky is a tantrum.\u00a0
cars move like cows
being herded toward home.\u00a0
this man, so well lit, throwing up\u00a0
some dog’s breakfast, a start-stopping
jazz of trombones \u2014 you can tell\u00a0
he is digging up
harder than shovels. you can tell
his whole soul’s\u00a0
coming out.\u00a0

DS MAOLALAI<\/strong>\u00a0has been nominated nine times for Best of the Net and seven times for the Pushcart Prize.
