It was a super bloom spring & the yellow butterflies
\nwere flying into speeding traffic. Charlie was
\nlooking at his phone, a text from his boy Troy,
\nwho always knows where the party\u2019s at, \u201cDowntown
\nat Clifton Park,\u201d Charlie woofed out. \u201cOh, yeah!\u201d
\nI was trying to Snapchat the mustard flowers, wild poppies\u2014
\nYet, the world smashed dark & echoes of metal
\nFolded into swans, flew through my head. I was
\nwearing new lipstick, a rusty red. I\u2019d just shaved my legs.
\nIt was a Saturday, the second week in May. The river
\nwas throwing itself across the earth, trying to baptize
\nthe Trump Era. Even the fish were getting shoved
\ntail-first down and over the rocky pathway to nowhere.
\nI tasted blood, drank the river in big gulps. I shook Charlie,
\nbut his face had no face and he hung like a meat-pile
\nfrom the seatbelt. Water rushed into the windows, happy
\nto fill space. I didn\u2019t die. That is the hard part. I stare at Charlie
\nin a tuxedo casket, wearing his prom clothes that still smell
\nlike cigarettes. I hold my breath behind my patchwork face.<\/p>\n
