We\u2019re going<\/em><br \/>\n<em>drinking with the Indians!\u201d<\/em><br \/>\nEquipped with a 30-pack, we\u2019d go to a guy named<br \/>\nFrankie Youngbear\u2019s<br \/>\ngreen slab-<br \/>\nhouse so they could drink and play euchre.<br \/>\n<em>\u201cIndians,\u201d <\/em>he\u2019d say <em>\u201care<\/em><br \/>\n<em>just like us but they were the land\u2019s first people,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Kid.\u201d<\/em><br \/>\nlooking at them like a student looks at a<br \/>\nmusty history textbook, I<br \/>\nnever thought they were that different.<br \/>\nOnly thing that stuck out was that we were<br \/>\npale and they looked kinda sunburnt.<br \/>\nQuality booze was<br \/>\nrare for my grandfather, but<br \/>\nsometimes, they\u2019d get a real nice bottle of<br \/>\nTeeling, this Irish whiskey that he loved. They could<br \/>\nusually drink it dry over two games, my grandfather<br \/>\nviciously condemning the government and what they did to the natives.<br \/>\nWe\u2019d leave when it started to get dark. The old man not<br \/>\nexactly walking straight from Frankie\u2019s house, still<br \/>\nyelling that he was sorry about Wounded Knee and myself<br \/>\nzig-zagging with him back to our own, separate life.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>COOPER SHEA <\/strong>is a poet from Iowa.
