 <\/p>\n

Upon landing on the moon,
\nI reach my robotic arm out
\ninto the silence. My solar panels,
\nlike metallic sunflowers, blossom
\nand angle to find light. The solar wind
\ncoats my body with a layer of dust
\nas I take in the grey desert
\nand the vast darkness beyond it —
\nmy new home.
\n 
\nAfter my first lunar night.
\nI trundle across the highlands
\nto survey the maria and craters stretching
\nin canyons before me. My wheels
\nplow through soil like snow
\nwith a scent resembling spent gunpowder.
\nMy arm extends to capture samples:
\nbasaltic rock, volcanic glass beads,
\nthe ubiquitous dust of comet particles.
\nI store them in my pockets, souvenirs
\nfor the journey back.
\n 
\nWeeks later I awake to find
\nI can no longer move — a glitch
\nin the control circuit. Rooted
\nto the surface, I listen to the static crackle
\nfrom my radio as my mind wanders
\nto the image of a single boot print.
\n 
\nAfter two years, I still huddle
\nlike a Rabbit, waiting
\nfor Chang\u2019e, the moon goddess
\ndrunk on the elixir of immortality.
\nBetween periods of blinding sun
\nand opaque shadow, I look out into space:
\neddies of neon nebula amid
\nthe scattering of stars hypnotize,
\nlull me into sleep mode
\nas I look back to earth, a blue crescent
\npinned to this lonely horizon.<\/p>\n
