In the hip<br \/>\nhigh dry grasses, we listen<\/p>\n<p>for the sounds of our enemies,<br \/>\nrockets swarming like wasps.<\/p>\n<p>After the summer of electric<br \/>\nwindmills, tents of ballast<\/p>\n<p>and your obsession<br \/>\nwith fireworks, you warned me<\/p>\n<p>about the palace of rituals<br \/>\nin your brother\u2019s bathroom,<\/p>\n<p>the glass eye in the wall,<br \/>\nthe unstoppable shooting star.<\/p>\n<p>You said you had seen<br \/>\nthe meridian of his kingdom,<\/p>\n<p>a soot-soft gryphon blinking<br \/>\nhis third eye. The next morning,<\/p>\n<p>before sunrise I took my hatchet<br \/>\nand naphthalene to your<\/p>\n<p>family\u2019s stable, burned your<br \/>\nbrother\u2019s junk-wood party down.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>MAUREEN DANIELS<\/strong> teaches English at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, where she is also a doctoral fellow in creative writing.
