{"id":7103,"date":"2016-03-03T16:43:48","date_gmt":"2016-03-03T23:43:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jerseydevilpress.com\/?page_id=7103"},"modified":"2016-03-03T16:43:48","modified_gmt":"2016-03-03T23:43:48","slug":"imperfect-appalachian-she-in-acrylic","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.jerseydevilpress.com\/?page_id=7103","title":{"rendered":"Imperfect, Appalachian She in Acrylic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Danielle Nicole Byington<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I model for the artist, my hair unwashed,<br \/>\nHis brush massaging it with exaggerated grime,<br \/>\nAn anxious texture to intimidate gallery gaze.<br \/>\nThe hours slowly falling behind the scene<br \/>\nBegin to bear streams of cluttered-sunset hues that<br \/>\nThe portrait cradles behind my body.<br \/>\nI pose in a corn stalk row,<br \/>\nThe background going on forever<br \/>\nLike a hotel hallway.<br \/>\nWorms fumbling for their key<br \/>\nMate on the dangling silk,<br \/>\nLeaving larvae that browns the artist\u2019s canvas.<br \/>\nHis paintbrush phantomizes a Native American<br \/>\nSprawled on her stomach,<br \/>\nElbows perching her interested head<br \/>\nAbove a Shakespeare text, her Anglo-painted eyes<br \/>\nLooking at me as if I know what I\u2019m doing.<br \/>\nMy arm falls asleep leaning on the hoe,<br \/>\nMy fingers shaking from clutching the corncob pipe,<br \/>\nAnd in his intermissions I smoke it,<br \/>\nChasing the tobacco with<br \/>\nBourbon I stashed in the set;<br \/>\nI pass the flask to Anoki.<br \/>\nShe squints when she swallows,<br \/>\nAnd drops of the power<br \/>\nSpill from her lips,<br \/>\nBlurring orbs of words in <em>Hamlet<\/em> &#8212;<br \/>\nAs if she needed those anyways.<br \/>\nHis strokes dress me in an American flag<br \/>\nCinched on one shoulder like a toga,<br \/>\nCompounding intellect and freedom,<br \/>\nAssuming I can cook and reproduce.<br \/>\nHe chooses chosen colors for my pallor,<br \/>\nAnd lightens my hair to imply tradition.<br \/>\nStanding so long, I burrow my toes in the soil,<br \/>\nKicking back at a sharpness.<br \/>\nHe instructs me to be still,<br \/>\nAnd my toes gently bleed on something beneath the canvas.<br \/>\nHe waves his hand and paintbrush in shock,<br \/>\nCursing the corn as if it has ears.<br \/>\nI look back;<br \/>\nCrimson runs up the stalks to the tips of their limp leaves,<br \/>\nDripping on the ground with a tribal patter.<br \/>\nAnoki shuts her Shakespeare book,<br \/>\nStanding to approach me, relieving my arm of the hoe,<br \/>\nPlacing a hand on my shoulder,<br \/>\nUntying the toga.<br \/>\nShe swings the hoe with a broad stroke,<br \/>\nBrushing my neck and chest with the tool,<br \/>\nIts heavy, metallic head collapsing into the dirt.<br \/>\nI want to clutch the wound, but she reaches first,<br \/>\nHer warm, brown hands catching my blood,<br \/>\nHer eyes looking for something inside me.<br \/>\nDisabling my portraiture, she finds it;<br \/>\nI know because her lips part,<br \/>\nThe reward of critical gaze painted on her face,<br \/>\nAnd she says, . . . <em>that is the question<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DANIELLE NICOLE BYINGTON<\/strong>&#8216;s work can be seen in <em>The Camel Saloon<\/em>, <em>Black Mirror Magazine<\/em>, <em>Right Hand Pointing<\/em>, and <em>Rust + Moth<\/em>. In pursuing her English-MA, Danielle&#8217;s academic work focuses on the boundary between creative writing and literature, such as appropriation and ekphrasis.
