{"id":6620,"date":"2015-03-04T10:28:27","date_gmt":"2015-03-04T17:28:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jerseydevilpress.com\/?page_id=6620"},"modified":"2015-03-04T10:28:27","modified_gmt":"2015-03-04T17:28:27","slug":"hunger","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.jerseydevilpress.com\/?page_id=6620","title":{"rendered":"Hunger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Sara Krueger<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I float the back channels in the swampish heat,<br \/>\npast the leavings of one town and then another,<br \/>\nkeeping my peepers peeled and my mask tugged tight.<\/p>\n<p>Every few miles I shore up and scan the trees,<br \/>\nfingering the blade I rescued<br \/>\nfrom Gummy\u2019s hog farm.<br \/>\nMy work boots sink into the muck<br \/>\nas I root around for something squirrely.<\/p>\n<p>The search is so much harder now after the change.<br \/>\nBut, Gummy needs the meat &#8212; &#8212;<br \/>\nbloody and almost beating.<br \/>\nHer book tells us these things.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019d got no teeth left in her head,<br \/>\nGummy didn\u2019t,<br \/>\nwhen I found her.<br \/>\nHer eyes had gone too from many months of basement living.<br \/>\nShe keeps me at this life,<br \/>\nGummy does,<br \/>\nand she makes me fancy<br \/>\nthat it ain\u2019t just the metal men out there<br \/>\nrustling along in the dark.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SARA KRUEGER<\/strong> received her B.A. in Film from Columbia College Chicago. She has directed several short films. Her written work has appeared in <em>Menacing Hedge<\/em> and <em>Devilfish Review<\/em>. She has attended artist residencies at the Atlantic Center for the Arts and the Ragdale Foundation.
