A great silence<br \/>\nensues. We reappear somewhere<br \/>\nhalf suburban-Jersey, Westchester,<br \/>\nthe Island. A big picture window,<br \/>\na view of vinyl and cape and split<br \/>\nlevel houses. A roomful of dogs<br \/>\nand cats. They watch us recover<br \/>\nour senses. A human couple<br \/>\nhovers nearby. Grim Fascist smiles. <\/p>\n<p>They inform us we\u2019re now keepers<br \/>\nof animals. We must suffer<br \/>\nfor the sin of domesticating<br \/>\ncreatures that the gods set free<br \/>\nin the instant of creation.<br \/>\nCaroline bears her milky fangs<br \/>\nbut the man waves a pistol and points<br \/>\nto a long row of empty dishes.<br \/>\n<em>Feed them<\/em>, he mutters, <em>this is your life<br \/>\nhenceforth<\/em>. I hate that heavy word<br \/>\nbut the cats and dogs look hopeful<br \/>\nso I open can after can<br \/>\nof smelly glop and fill the dishes.                         <\/p>\n<p>Caroline can\u2019t contain herself<br \/>\ndespite the gun-threat. Exploding<br \/>\ninto her White Goddess costume<br \/>\nshe goes pale as the Angel of Death<br \/>\nand blood paints her lips. Her hair<br \/>\nbecomes a knot of coral snakes<br \/>\nand her gaze turns the errant couple<br \/>\ninto Easter Island figures<br \/>\nof lichen-speckled rock. I applaud,<br \/>\nalthough Caroline swore years ago<br \/>\nshe\u2019d never resume this fatal role.                      <\/p>\n<p>We step outside and discover<br \/>\nwe\u2019re still in the city after all,<br \/>\na block from where we disappeared,<br \/>\nso we continue our stroll,<br \/>\nthe skyscrapers lilting like pipes<br \/>\nof an old brass organ, the dogs<br \/>\nand cats trailing after us<br \/>\nwith their carnivorous expressions<br \/>\ncone-shaped, honed and tapered to points.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WILLIAM DORESKI<\/strong> teaches at Keene State College in New Hampshire.
