It scares me when it gets like this
\nand of course the scars frighten alien touch,
\n<\/span>but at least they are tangible,
\n<\/span>at least they are real.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When it gets like this,
\nit gets carnal, sounds erupt,
\n<\/span>sounds like this that which
\n<\/span>I could never again create.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And even the screams
\nI cannot hear,
\n<\/span>eyes tightly shut
\n<\/span>knuckles white between gripped hair,
\n<\/span>lips stretched wide,
\n<\/span>trying to articulate despair.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

They are merely raw,
\near-shattering bombs
\n<\/span>attacking my unexpecting conscious,
\n<\/span>rendering me nearly comatose,
\n<\/span>even though it is I
\n<\/span>who throws the missiles.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When it gets like this:
\nmy hands form a triangle,
\n<\/span>my breathing forms a rhythm,
\n<\/span>\u201cI am calm,\u201d I think,
\n<\/span>and yet I know, I am exploding.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And that is why
\nthe skunk smoke swirls,
\n<\/span>the ink of life drips,
\n<\/span>the body hungers.
\n<\/span>That is when I get scared,
\n<\/span>When it gets like this,
\n<\/span>When I remember how it was
\n<\/span>And how it still could be.<\/span><\/p>\n

HELENA AINSWORTH<\/strong> is a seventeen-year-old current resident of the United States who has moved over twenty-one times, lived on two different continents, in four different states.
